Deciding Who to Invite to Your Wedding

To invite, or not to invite. That is the question. Hey, no one ever said it would be easy, but here are some tips to consider as you make your decision.

It can seem overwhelming deciding who to invite to your wedding. Pair this with selecting just the right invitations, and it can seem downright impossible compiling your guest list and getting the invitations out exactly as you envision. However, following some easy tips to minimize the frustration can help!

Start with a Number

The first thing you should do is decide how many people you want to invite to your wedding. This will make it easier to decide who to invite, especially if your location can only fit so many people. Consider variables like budget and space when deciding how many guests you’d like to attend.

Family

Ask parents on both sides to help compile a list of family members. Don’t feel obligated to invite everyone. You may even consider excluding children if your guest list must be small. Large families can suddenly become a party of two, making your guest list much easier to manage.

Friends

For friends, use the “one year” rule. Consider your friendships carefully. When deciding who to invite, consider inviting only friends that you have had a meaningful conversation with within the last year. This will help cut away a number of guests that you don’t actually have a close relationship with. Remember, you would have to feed and gift those acquaintances!

Selecting the Invitations

Once you have decided who to invite, it is time to start thinking about the invitations. If everyone on your list has an e-mail address and access to the web regularly, you can opt for e-mail invitations, which can save you money and reduce your need for paper. However, if the guests you plan to invite are busy individuals or don’t have e-mail access, you could consider magnetic invitations. You should also take the type of wedding you are having into consideration.  Colors and themes can easily be incorporated into your wedding invitations, and you can get as creative as you’d like.

Although you may want to share your special day with everyone, you may have budget constraints that will limit your guest list. Overall, keeping a simple list of who to invite by keeping things personal can help prevent you from overdoing your guest list.
